cont{\'{\i}}nua, que se estende do sul da regi{\~a}o
Amaz{\^o}nica, centro-oeste e sudeste do Brasil e oceano
Atl{\^a}ntico sudoeste (ATSO).
circula{\c{c}}{\~a}o de baixos n{\'{\i}}veis
atmosf{\'e}ricos, aumentando a taxa de precipita{\c{c}}{\~a}o
sobre o oceano em at{\'e} 10 vezes o valor da m{\'e}dia
As
atmosf{\'e}rica. Nossos resultados sugerem, no entanto, que a
din{\^a}mica oce{\^a}nica de escala submensal associada {\`a}
superf{\'{\i}}cie oce{\^a}nica, for{\c{c}}ada
convectiva for{\c{c}}ada pela precipita{\c{c}}{\~a}o associada
sugerindo que o mecanismo din{\^a}mico, da forma como est{\'a}
ABSTRACT: The South Atlantic Convergence
Zone (SACZ) is one of the main synoptic-scale atmospheric
phenomena during the South American summer, characterized by a
continuous cloud band extending from the southern Amazon region,
midwest and southeastern Brazil, and the Southwestern Atlantic
Ocean (SWAT). Throughout the oceanic SACZ (OSACZ) episodes, the
cloud band above the SWAT may cover an area five times the size of
the state of Minas Gerais, causing significant changes in the
lower levels atmospheric circulation, increasing the precipitation
rate over the ocean up to tenfold the climatological average and
can remain active for 4 to 17 days in extreme cases. This thesis
hypothesizes that the synoptic variability in the low atmospheric
levels, caused by the presence of the OSACZ, is able to promote
alterations in the properties and dynamics of ocean mixed layer
(OML). The few mentions of this atmospheric phenomenon in the
upper ocean refer to the sea surface temperature (SST) decrease
below the cloud band, forced by the reduction in short wave
radiation incidence over the ocean. A dynamic negative feedback
mechanism is also reported, where the cyclonic rotation of surface
winds, characteristic of the southern part of the OSACZ, induces a
SST decrease via Ekman pumping, aiding in the dissipation of
atmospheric convection. The results suggest that the submonthly
scale oceanic dynamics associated with the OSACZ is more complex,
being governed by distinct mechanisms to the north and to the
south of the cloud band. To the north, an OML deepening was
detected, related to the intensification of the N-NE surface winds
and convective instability on the ocean surface, thermodynamically
forced by presence of the cloud band. In addition, the pattern of
wind-generated gravity waves associated with the OSACZ has the
potential to intensify this deepening. In this region, a cooling
of the OML also occurs due to entrainment of colder waters from
its own base, connected to both the OML deepening and the
horizontal currents divergence in its bottom, as well as the
existence of colder waters below it. On the other hand, to the
south of the cloud band, there is a thinning of the OML, related
to the surface winds deceleration, and especially to the
connective stability forced by the OSACZ associated rainfall,
which results in an ocean buoyancy gain, despite the intense short
wave radiation incidence reduction. Regarding Ekman pumping, our
results suggest that although one has cyclonic wind vorticity
acting at the surface in the southern part of the OSACZ, there is
no upward velocity at the OML base, nor is the water below it
colder. These two factors, combined with the OML thinning,
suppress the entrainment, which suggests that the dynamic
mechanism of surface cooling, as is has been proposed in the
literature, may not result in a SST decrease.",
